Macie Blinn recruited to play for University of Illinois

Macie BlinnGreenville’s Macie Blinn has caused quite stir in High School hoops.  She has played basketball for Greenville for the last 4 years, with record-breaking results.  She holds Green Wave records for points in a career and points in a game, among others.  She was recently recruited to play at the University of Illinois. A Big Ten College.

Dr. Michael Albert has treated Macie for Idiopathic Scoliosis for the last few years.  She had surgery in 2003, and has shown improvement and success ever since.  Macie has never been defeated by her spinal condition.  She has used her strength and love of the game to show us all what she can do.

Dayton Daily News writer Greg Billing recently covered her game play in a February 128th article:

Blinn is teaching a few lessons of her own. Often thought of as a scorer only, the senior's all-around game has made opponents take notice.  "She's up there among the best (I've coached)," said Greenville coach Tom Rettig. "She has the ability to create, the ability to shoot and the ability to guard."

This season, teams have used different game plans to stop the 6-foot-1 wing who averages 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists. Troy recently used a box-and-one and triple-team trap to hold Blinn to a season-low nine points. Others have let Blinn fire away and tried taking away the Green Wave's other four players. They've met with mixed results.

"It's a compliment," Blinn said of the attention. "I kind of learn from it, and it helps me get better in the future. Sometimes it's a little frustrating. But I try to keep my composure and not let them be able to tell.  "In practice I try to become the best player I can be and help out my teammates. If they stop me, I can pass the ball so they can score."

Blinn — who became Greenville's first Big Ten player when she signed with the University of Illinois — always knew basketball would be in her future. She started playing YMCA ball at age 5 and AAU ball at 9. The three-sport standout always favored basketball over volleyball and softball.  "I was never the girl playing Barbies," Blinn said. "I was always out with the guys shooting baskets and stuff. ... I just like the game. It's a lot more intense than the other games. I just like the fast pace."

Blinn's scoring is just as intense as the game. Her school-record 42 points against Lima Shawnee on Jan. 26 topper her previous best of 41 as a sophomore.  "She has outstanding knowledge of the game. She plays all the time and obviously that makes a difference," Rettig said.
